1.General information

• is used with singular and plural nouns, countable or uncountable ones, to talk about something specific. (este folosit cu substantive la numărul singular sau plural, numărabile sau nu, pentru a exprima un lucru specific).
  
• if the following word begins with a vowel we speak [], if the following word begins with a consonant, we speak [].( dacă cuvântul care îl urmeaza incepe cu o vocală, se citește [] , dacă cuvântul care îl urmează începe cu o consoană, se citește [] )
  

2. Use:

We use „the”:

• before nouns that are unique (inaintea substantivelor care sunt unice)
  

  The moon is bright tonight.
  

  (Luna este luminoasă in seara aceasta.)
  

• when the listener/reader knows which thing we mean (it may have been mentioned before). ( când lucrul despre care se face vorbirea este cunoscut ascultatorului/ cititorului ( este posibil să fii fost menționat anterior)
  

  My favourite book is „Eat, Pray, Love”. The book is written by …..
  

  ( Cartea mea preferată este „Eat, Pray, Love”. Cartea este scrisă de….)
  

• when it is understood which thing we mean ( se subînțelege noțiunea la care se face referire)
  

  -Where is the bathroom?
  

  -It is on the first floor.
  

  ( -Unde este baia?
  

  -Este la primul etaj.)
  

• with superlative adjective (cu adjective la superlative)
  

  Ron is the tallest boy in our class.
  

  (Ron este cel mai inalt băiat din clasa noastră.)
  

• to talk about musical instruments (pentru a vorbi despre instrumente musicale).
  

  Joe plays the guitar very well.
  

  (= Joe can play any type of guitar.)
  

  (Joe cântă la chitară foarte bine.(=Joe poate să cânte la orice model de chitară.).
  

• with certain proper nouns ( cu anumite substantive proprii)
  
  • oceans, seas, rivers (oceane, mări, râuri): the Black Sea, the Danube
    
  • group of islands ( grupuri de insule): the Maldives
    
  • mountain ranges ( lanțuri muntoase): the Alps
    
  • nationalities (naționalități): the British
    
  • names of countries that includes word such as Republic, Kingdom, States or Emirates ( nume de țări care include cuvinte precum Republica, Regat, State, Emirate): the United State
    
  • many famous/ historical buildings ( cladiri faimoase/istorice): the White House
    
  • names of cinemas
    (the Rex), hotels ( the Sheraton), theatres ( the Apollo), museums ( the Prado), ships, institutions, galleries
    
  • names of families (nume de familii): ( the Browns)
